October-November 1999 missed

August-September 1999 (was never printed)

We had some terrific flying over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. A couple of gliders made it across the Pennines with Keith Butterfield and Andy Tebay landing at Sutton Bank in the club K21 and Peter Lewis making it back to Walney. Unfortunately the tug engine expired the same day and so flying has been sparse since. The club trip to Hus Bos wasn't particularly successful, except for Graham Welch who completed his 100km diploma.

We have however discovered that Pilatuses (Pilati?) breed after a second B4 joined the private fleet recently. We left the two of them together on the trailer park and when we came back a week later we found a third one there... Obviously still a very popular glider.

June-July 1999

The worst of the weather appears to be behind us now and we've been taking advantage of the improvement. Peter Lewis and Andrew Tebay, a pair of opportunistic midweek flyers, made the first notable flight of the year in the K21, getting to over 15,000 feet in wave and covering 130km around Whitehaven before dusk put an end to the flight. There have also been several days when the winds have allowed plenty of ridge soaring on the ridges around us. We have even had a few thermal flights - not bad for March!

April-May 1999

Flying has been sparse recently with the weather mainly to blame, although it has meant we were able to C of A the entire fleet in double quick time. Thanks go to Peter Lewis and everyone else that helped out. When we're not flying the very active social side of the club takes over. The last event was the best, most enjoyable, and profitable, Christmas Party in recent years. We are all looking forward to club trips this year to Hus Bos, Spain, Pocklington and Portmoak - you've been warned and our reputation preceeds us - make sure the bars are well stocked!

There has been a steady trickle of visitors from other clubs, in particular our waterlogged neighbours at Chipping, most taking advantage of our free reciprical membership. Why don't you pay us a visit, or failing that visit our web-site at www.lakesgc.force9.co.uk (oh, you're already here...)

February-March 1999

Our annual dinner/prize giving was reasonably well attended and as much fun as ever. Trophies went to: Neil Braithwaite/Roger Copley (most outstanding flight); Graham Welch (for Diamond Height); Linda Dawson (most outstanding progress); Peter Lewis (Greatest gain of height); Alan Dennis (Services to the club); Roger Copley (Club Ladder); Gordon Furness (Best flight by non-silver); Peter Redshaw/Gordon Furness (Best dual flight); Keith Butterfield/Keith Whitworth (Best dual gain of height); John Martindale (Wooden Spoon).

Congratulatons to Lyn Martindale who gained gold height on a trip to Aboyne. Also to Linda Dawson and Phil Storer have now both completed their bronze badges.
